10 Places to Visit while in Rome – Wanderlust @62

Rome is the capital of Italy and is a cosmopolitan city, with ancient ruins, a headquarters of the Roman Catholic church, has a display of the arts and architecture. This is one place that you will never run out of things to see and do. And here are some places to visit while in Rome:

1) The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Ampitheatre, is an oval ampitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome. This is the capital’s most iconic monument, with almost 2,000 years of history. The Colosseum, along with the Vatican, is Rome’s most visited tourist attraction with over 6 million people visiting it every year.

On 2007, the Colosseum became one of the Seven Wonders of the modern world.

2) The Arch of Constantine is one of the more popular of the three surviving ancient Rome triumplal arches. This was built hastily to celebrate the victory of Constantine over Maxentius.

The other two are the Arch of Titus and the Arch of Septimius Severus

3) The Vatican Museum is a Christian and art museum located within the city boundaries of the Vatican City. It has a collection of paintings, sculptures and other works of art collected by the Popes through centuries.

4) Vatican City is an independent city-state in the heart of Rome, Italy. It is the smallest country in the world and is most famous as the centre of the Roman Catholic church. You can also find here, the Saint Peter’s Square which is a large plaza located directly in front of the St Peter’s Basilica.

5) The Trevi Fountain is said to be the best known of Rome’s numerous fountains. Legend says that when you throw a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder, you will return to Rome in the future. These coins thrown into its water is collected daily and donated to charity.

6) The Sistine chapel is a chapel in the Apostolic palace, the official residence of the Pope. Before our tour group went in the chapel, our tour specialist introduced us to whatever we will see inside. (As seen below) The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Museum is best known for Michaelangelo’s painting of the ceiling.

You are allowed to take photos and videos into the museum but once at the entrance of the Sistine Chapel, you will be instructed to keep quiet and to not take photos and videos.

7) The Castel Sant’Angelo (and the St. Angelo Bridge) is one of the most popular landmarks in Rome. It is a cylindrical building and is located just down the road from the Vatican city. In history, it was initially used as a mausoleum for the Roman emperor Hadrian and his family, was later used by the popes as fortress and castle but now, it is a museum.

8) The Three fountains in Piazza Navona.

9) The Pantheon is ancient Rome’s most preserved monument. The interior is really beautiful.

10) The Fontana della Pigna is a former Roman fountain but now decorates the wall of the Vatican.

11) The Piazza di Spagna is one of the famous squares of Rome. When we went there, it was night time and there was so much construction going on that we weren’t able to appreciate its beauty. The stock photo below is how it should look like 😂
