A love lock or love padlock is a custom where padlocks are affixed to a fence, bridge or gate by lovers. The key is thrown away to symbolise everlasting love.
In Europe, love locks started in the early 2000s. The love padlocks are intended to be a love gesture and it can be seen on bridges in major cities all over the world.

You can see padlocks along the Mala Strana (meaning Lesser Town) district on a small pedestrian bridge below the Prague castle.
Can also be seen on the Old Town end of the Charles Bridge.

I recall seeing the padlock ritual done on television. The two women that did it got divorced a year later. Probably because they did it without their husbands

There’s some here in Melbourne too, but I think the council removed it and is now being discouraged.
