Montserrat is a mountain range in Catalonia, Spain and it is just a day trip away from the more energetic and vibrant nearby metropolis of Barcelona. This is the La Sardana Monument in Barcelona where our tour group met up.

On the way to the monastery, you will first get a glimpse of the Montserrat Mountain and the nature surrounding it. Montserrat means “saw mountain” or “serrated mountain” which is how it appears to a person’s naked eye.

The first thing to do when you get there is enjoy the breathtaking view of Catalonia. You can’t help but wonder how nature was able to create such an amazing and unique rock formation.

For others, you can go on a funicular or a cable car or go hiking. But for me, I enjoyed just sitting down, immersing on the view and enjoying the serenity of the place.

This is a sculpture of Obat Oliba the founder of the Montserrat Monastery, created by Manuel Cusachs in 1992.

Visiting the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey. The Montserrat church is a Gothic structure, severely damaged in Napoleon’s war (1808-1814) and reconstructed in the end of the 19th century.

The square in the centre has a beautiful open courtyard with marble flooring. This is just on the opposite side of the basilica.

Above the candles is the image of the Black Madonna made of mosaic.

The interior of the Basilica of Montserrat is much more amazing in person.

There is this gorgeous stained glass window that really stood out.
